Hissing sound from engine air intake and unstable idle. What's your diagnostic?

My car is a Nissan Maxima 1991. It's old I know.
Problems:
1. Hissing sound from engine air intake.
2. Unstable idle ("mmmmmmmm puf puff" from the muffler)
3. Occasionally,I can hear a metallic sound (like a piece of metal touching the pavement) coming from the passenger side when I push the gas pedal. I checked under but nothing. It might not be related to the 2 first problems.

the hissing sound is very likely causing the unstable idle. it could be a vacuum air line is off, loose, cracked, damaged?

I would start by checking each and every one until you can safely confirm its not that. that will take....2 minutes?

then study your air intake...is something stuck? caught? Not opening right? jammed and held in place?

if nothing like that shows up, then its time to start trying to find the metal noise you are hearing and see what that is, but I kind of doubt its related to the hiss...
