Air tools work by using a compressed air supply, which drives the internal workings of the air tool. The most common types of air tools in the manufacturing industry are drills, grinders and sanders. Air powered tools in the industrial market are generally cheaper to run, maintain and have a higher power to weight ratio than their electrical powered counterparts, despite being slightly more expensive in the initial purchase.
Since the initial purchase of a pneumatic tool is more expensive, it is advised that preventative maintenance is carried out, in order to prolong the tools lifespan and keep the tool running at its optimum level. Performing regular maintenance makes it possible to extend the use and reliability of the tool, be it an electric or air powered tool. The most common maintenance procedures would include partial or complete overhauls, oiling and lubricating components.
The alternative to preventative maintenance:
If preventative maintenance is not performed at regular service intervals, the likelihood of a tool failing to work correctly is increased. When a tool is no longer able to perform its required function, corrective maintenance is required. This is a reactive method of tool maintenance whereas preventative maintenance is a proactive measure. Corrective maintenance work may include the replacement of gears, cylinders, rotors, field coils, armatures and gearboxes which are normally expensive to replace.

Preventative maintenance should be performed by trained and experienced technicians.The intervals at which maintenance checks can be carried out are typically monthly, quarterly and yearly.
