American Football Primer for Soccer Fans
During a football game in America, every play must have eleven players from each side on the field. There are many players on the team, but the number used on each individual play is always eleven per side. Depending on the level of the football team, competition to make the team can be very difficult.
Many schools have a hard time getting enough people to even tryout, because they are so small. But larger schools can be very different, and successfully getting chosen to join is not often a given. How to play each position is a good thing to know, especially in understanding the total game.
Even if you don't like the game, quarterbacks are always recognizable for various reasons. Complete newbies to this American sport can often spot who the quarterback is just watching the game. Once the players lined up, and the ball is in the hands of a quarterback, the fun begins. If the quarterback is going to be sacked, he might run with the ball trying to get a first down before he gets tackled. The quarterback's job to maintain the players focus and call the shots while playing.
As with anything else in life, football requires following certain rules in order to play the game. The defense must stay in their area and wait for the ball to be hiked before they can start playing the game. The focus of every ballplayer is to make sure they know who to watch once the ball is in motion. After the huddle, the play that is called will determine where each player will go and what they will do. Those that play the game must be aware of their responsibilities for their position and what they need to carry out. Certain movements and responsibilities are designated to each and every player on the defense. Players must also memorize the plays that will be given during the game to execute them properly.
American football is about moving the ball down the field, and this happens in one of two ways. One of the ways for moving the ball is called rushing, and it is simply running with the ball. Running the ball is also called rushing, but the term is used in other instances, like rushing the passer. The forward pass is the second way of moving the ball, but it depends on more people for success.
A forward pass is normally when the quarterback drops back and throws the ball to a receiver, who is farther down the field. Besides the forward pass, there is also the backward pass, or lateral, which can be done anywhere on the field. When first launching into the football program, just bear in mind it's not learned over night. This is not a game that can be quickly learned or even mastered. Your commitment and desire to achieve a rewarding outcome will give you an advantage.

I believe the 1.62 ball was replaced by the 1.68 ball around 1960 bu became compulsory for tournaments a little later
We tried out both sizes in the 1988 R & A Spring & Autumn meetings and invited comments. We used a 1.68 produced by a British company which was really rubbish and caused howls of complaint. The following year the Club supplied the American Titleist 1.68 and nobody wanted to play with a British ball of ANY size ever again.
