I have a first floor flat (with wooden floor boards) in a converted house I want to sound proof the floor so that the ground floor flat does not suffer from noise made by people upstairs Is there a soundproofing underlay which could be laid on the upstairs floors under the carpets or a type of sound proofing that can be laid under floor boards between the joists(I am trying rock wool ,but would like to know if there is anything better on the market)
If you have carpet it will do a pretty good job. If you wantt o go for more soundproofing it will be a big job. Either you need to take up the boards and put sound insulation between the joists or you will need to lay a new floating floor on top of the boards sitting on a textile underlay but not fixed down. That means using something heavy so probably 20mm or more thick, and you will have to cut down the doors so they can open and close. If you go for the insulation between joists, 4 inches of rockwool will help and is the building regs standard for insulation between rooms in the same house. However that will not remove the problem. The main noise you can deal with is footfalls on wooden boards, and carpet does that fine. You will probably find int he lease that the floors have to be carpeted anyhow, regardless of whatelse you have done.
