Why a Port Map is Essential for Navigation
Any comprehensive port guide service will include detailed information relating to a variety of topics including the conditions and facilities at each port, their berthing details etc, whilst also providing complete and detailed port maps and port plans. A port map, when complemented with a port guide, is an essential item for Shipmasters to safeguard against navigational accidents and to ensure the safe voyage of all sea vessels.
A great deal of information can be provided in a clear manner to allow for the easy reference of port information at a glance. In so doing, a port map supports the planning of a vessel's passage when entering and departing from a port both safely and seamlessly. Ultimately this helps Shipmasters and their navigating officers to plan a route in advance whilst also being able to identify any potential hazards or unsafe areas, thus minimising the risk of an accident occurring. Mooring diagrams and port photographs can further help the Shipmaster to visualise the actual port, the port layout and its facilities in advance.
A good port map should be geo-referenced and include the country plan of the port's location in order to show the wider sea passage route. It should also include a comprehensive range of information such as the approach to the port, clearly labelled bays and harbours, the water depths, location of bridges, moorings, anchorage areas, ferry and yacht terminals, any offshore islands and hazardous areas of rock, sand, mud and shingle.
It should also display the location of the actual port entry and any harbours and terminals at the port. Comprehensive port plans will include berth locations and layout diagrams, which will show the individual berthing and mooring arrangements at the port according to the size of the vessel. A port plan may also detail the berthing equipment available for vessels at the port. Where available, Shipmasters' port plans can also be utilised for navigation and planning purposes. These port plans are available in good port information and port plan packages.
In some cases, where a Shipmaster is unfamiliar with the port area or it is a particularly hazardous area to navigate, pilots who have specific localised port knowledge are available to guide vessels into and out of the port safely. They will usually charge ships a fee for their services. However, this is not a guaranteed service for Shipmasters at every port and it is strongly recommended to prepare for and plan the passage into and out of ports in extensive detail in advance to avoid any navigational issues or potential accidents.

I have a laptop at work that attaches to a port for use with a full size monitor and standard keyboard. I would like to use both the laptop monitor and the full size monitor as dual monitors. I am told this is possible. Is it and how?
