Most of the early steam engines were used to pump water out of mines. This enabled mines to go deeper and extract more coal or metal ore, which in turn was used to power the industrial revolution. The lessons learned from the Newcomen engine enabled more efficient engines to be built which could then be used for other mining work such as lifting the coal and the miners from below ground, and eventually become light enough to be used for traction engines, railway locomotives, and steam ships.
