What does one standard deviation, 2 SDs, 3 SDs, etc, mean? And how do I turn SD to a percent?
I've learned the concept of standard deviation, but when I learned it there was nothing about there being multiple standard deviations. When I do the calculations based on data values, I got one number for the standard deviation and it just indicates how far the data values are from their mean on "average" basically. So how can there be multiple values for this? It's a single value answer. I believe that saying X is 2 SDs from the mean means something different than SD used in the context I described in the beginning.
Furthermore, I have to convert the SDs of 2 samples into percents and then compare them. How do I do it? And also I need help visualizing the answer I get after converting SD to percent. How does a 5% SD compare to a 25% SD if I were to visually represent it somehow.
This may be a long message, but I think my questions are simple.

You are correct in your understanding of the Standard Deviation. 2 SDs means twice the value of the SD. If you imagine your results converted into a frequency table and plotted, 2 SD means all those values that lie within a variation of twice the SD from the mean.
To convert to % is difficult because you need to know the statistical distribution. For most applications we use SD in analysing errors and often can assume a normal distibution pattern.
In this case 1 SD is roughly equivalent to 68%, this means in a measurement system 68% of all measured values lie within 1SD of the actual value. 2 SD encloses approximately 95% of the values and 3 SD approximately 99.7%.
If I specify that a distance measurement system needs to be accurate to within 1m to 1 SD then 68% of the measurements must be within 1m of the true value. If the accuracy needs to be 1m to 2 SD then 95% of the measurements need to be within 1m. The later is a more accurate system.
