Radiant barrier for a new home construction.?
We are in the process of building a new home. We are considering doing a radiant barrier with our metal roof but there is so much information out there that I don't know what would be the best combination. We are also doing the spray foam insulation.
As a manufacturer of radiant barrier http://www.AtticFoil.com/ I can tell you that combining a fully encapsulated, non-vented attic and a radiant barrier is the way to go. (especially if you live in a hot-sunny climate). Basically you want to build a big ice chest and wrap it with foil. This will provide the maximum reduction of BOTH conductive heat flow AND radiant heat flow.
If the metal roof has and air space and is installed over either furring strips or a batten system then you can put the radiant barrier on TOP of your waterproof membrane with the foil facing up and the airspace between the foil and the metal roof. With "normal" shingles you have no airspace, so you can't just put foil between the shingles and the felt.

I would also consider using radiant barrier as a house wrap. We have a 60" product that is actually less expensive than tyvek ANY you get the radiant barrier benefit.

The home also uses a DOUBLE deck roof system. Basically two roof decks with a 2" ventilated airspace with two layers of AtticFoil® radiant barrier foil. The shingles (normal type) are nailed to the top deck and 6" of foam is applied to the bottom deck.
Yesterday 6/06/2011 in Dallas, TX the TOP of the roof shingle temperature was near 180º on a 100º day and the bottom of the lower deck was only 109º. This is WITHOUT any foam installed yet.
Without a radiant barrier, the bottom of the roof deck would probably be close to 150º. By installing the radiant barrier you significantly reduce the Delta-T or difference between inside and outside. The lower the Delta-T, the less heat flow you have. Less heat flow = lower cost of cooling/heating.
