The Many Advantages of Roof Rack Systems
There are many advantages of having roof rack systems for your car or SUV. A roof rack can come in many different models. There are racks that span the width of the roof of your vehicle, have attachments to secure bicycles, skis or snow boards, and even boats. There are also racks that can accommodate storage containers for securing an assortment of different items.
What any kind of roof rack systems can do is open up space in your car or other vehicle. We all know how much of a hassle it can be trying to stuff a bunch of camping gear in the back of your car, especially if you have children. The trunk just doesn't provide enough space, but having a roof rack can provide the space you need. These are different from the racks you see on the back of vehicles, because they are set up in a way that provides a safe and secure way to transport your items without having to worry about them falling off the back or your car, or obstructing your view in the mirror.
Roof rack systems as mentioned earlier come in a variety of shapes and sizes. How these roof rack models work is they attach directly to the top ridge of the car along the running edge of the vehicle. They span the width of the roof, and have several different ways to hold various items. Bikes for example can sit in rails that face front to back across these racks, and the bike can be secured with straps or brackets. This means that you don't have to worry about breaking down your bike, and when you get to your destination, they are ready to go for a ride. Skis and boards sit on the racks, with another arm bracket that folds down over them, and these have cushions on them so they don't damage the skis or snow board. Small boats sit on the roof rack and are secured down with strapping. There are even brackets available so you can safely attach a carrier storage container. These containers are usually aerodynamic, with sloping fronts to have air pass over the top of them easily. They have locking mechanisms, hinges so the top opens up smoothly, and some models are even spring loaded or lock into an open position for hands free loading and unloading.
When you are tired of dealing with overcrowding in your car, it is time to get yourself some kind of roof rack systems for your vehicle. Prices really vary depending on the size and type of roof rack. The better the system is, the easier it is to remove, the higher the price may be. Good basic models that can accommodate a variety of different items start at around $150. If you are wanting racks that include storage bins, these can be well into the two to three hundred dollar range.
It is a good idea that when you are looking for roof rack systems that you look around for the right product at the right price. You want to make sure that these roof rack products have cushioning that can hold your items without damaging them, and that includes and straps with the product.

Just bought my first car - How do I get the Thule roof rack off?
I recently bought my first ever car, a 1995 VW Jetta. It has a Thule rack on the roof, whether it's a bike rack or a ski rack.... I want it off. It looks as if it needs a key - the previous owner didn't have a key and I couldn't find it. Should I just drill it out? At that point the rack is ruined, but is it even worth any money anyway?
I would recommend going with the previous poster's advice, as the key will not only maintain the quality of your roof and of the rack itself, but it will also leave you with the option of reattaching the roof rack at a later point if you need it.
...because let's face it: there's not a ton of room inside those Jettas...
