How to change a single pole switch to an occupancy sensor switch?
I have what may be a very basic question; I want to change a simple single pole light switch in my closest to one that has an occupancy sensor that has an auto shut off. The current switch has your basic green (ground), white and black wires. The new switch has a green ground, a white neutral, a black hot and a red load wire. How do I wire this when there is an extra wire (red) on the switch that I don’t have in my outlet box. I believe I spice the red and the white together but I’m not sure and don’t want to assume and blow out the switch. Can someone assist?
If your existing switch has a white and black connected to it (with no other wires in the box), then I am afraid that you are out of luck with that sensor. That wiring is commonly referred to as a 'switch loop' (I'm sure that there are some other names too).
The occupancy sensor requires a neutral to function. The wires on the new occupancy sensor are as follows: Green=ground (obvious), White=Neutral, Black=Line power in, Red=Load (switched) power out to the light fixture.
Your existing wiring is likely this: Bare=ground, White=Line power in from the fixture box, Black=Load (switched) power returning to the fixture. This means that you do not have a neutral at this box.
In these questions, someone out there almost always suggests to connect the neutral to the ground. PLEASE disregard any such advice. It can be dangerous and it is definitely a violation of National Electrical Code.
You can rewire the run from the fixture box to the switch. Use a 3-conductor (plus ground) for this (match the current wire size). This way, you can have the Line power in (black), the Load power out (red), the neutral (white), and ground.
If you are not sure of what you are doing, please call a licensed electrician to do this safely and correctly.
