Shop Light/Fluorescent in kitchen help?!?
I have a light fixture in my kitchen that is a shop light type deal with fluorescent bulbs. The problem I have is it won't turn on properly. I have to flip the switch and wait about 10 minutes, then flip the switch off then back on for the light to come on.
If I replace the bulbs it will work fine for a couple months and then go right back to the same thing. I thought these bulbs are suppose to last longer than that??
What could the problem be? I am by no means an electrician..
It is almost certainly the ballast. The ballast is mounted inside the fixture (usually a black box) and it is what gives the bulbs enough juice to start up (they take more to start than they do to run). They often go bad.
You can buy a new ballast, but in my experience, often a whole new fixture is cheaper or just a few dollars more, than the part alone. Home Depot or Lowe's carries ballasts as well as that type of light fixture. I've gotten true shop light fixtures for as little as 12 dollars, but ballasts are close to 30-35. Replacing a light fixture is really pretty easy, just 2 or 3 wires. Just make sure you shut the power off first. Then its usually a matter of matching up the colors.
