Why are space suits white, rather than silver?
Wouldn't silver be more reflective?
The first NASA spacesuits were silver in color, because scientists thought this would reflect the burning rays of the sun. The color of space suite later was changed to white for several reasons.
One of the most important reasons is that when the astronauts go outside the space shuttle or International Space Station on space walks, white reflects heat so that the astronauts don’t get too hot.
Another reason, white is easily visible against the black background of space.
Since astronauts always go out in pairs, one of the suits always has red stripes in four places so the astronauts can tell one from the other.
The most commonly seen space suit these days is the orange ESS Space Shuttle suit. It is worn during takeoff and landing, to protect the crew if there is a problem with the air in the shuttle itself. The suit is orange so that if the crew has to parachute out of the spacecraft in an emergency they will be easier for rescue crews to spot.
