Introduction to Basic Residential Steel Framing components

For more than hundred years, steel has been used in the building and construction industry across the globe. While it is commonly associated with bridges and skyscrapers, steel has now strongly emerged as the material of choice for residential building framing. Along with other benefits, steel provides the builder a solid, dimensionally stable and easy to handle framing system for homes and commercial units.

Cold formed sheet (CFS) steel is the most economical, light weight and efficient alternative to conventional wood framing systems. There is a cold formed steel framing member for almost any application. This feature allows for simplification of the framing system while offering highest design flexibility and ease of fabrication and erection.

Building blocks of a framed house are divided into three main assemblies: roofs, walls and floors. The superior strength of steel can provide wider spacing between components which in turn allows for lower material and labor costs.

Roofs: Easy availability in wide variety of thicknesses and sizes allow steel framing to be used in nearly any roof system, from the plain shed roof to the most complicated hip and valley installation. Roof trusses can be fabricated on–site or off– site depending on the design requirements in full or sectioned assemblies.

Walls: Typically, there are two types of steel studs used in steel framing – structural studs and drywall studs. Structural studs are used for exterior and interior load bearing walls while drywall steel studs are used for non–load bearing interior partitions.

Floors: Normally, builders choose joist depths ranging from 7 to 10 inches with a steel thickness of 0.04 to 0.10 inches. A lap in the steel joist might be useful in fixing the deviations in the RCC or masonry foundation walls. Floor joists provided with knock–outs at consistent intervals can easily accommodate the installation of plumbing and electrical services.
