Understanding Buffers and Polishers
If you have decided to collect cars or motorcycles for hobby, or you are in the building maintenance business, you will eventually run in to buffers and polishers. This tool is necessary if you desire to keep a paint finish or floor looking its best at all times. Basically what this tool does is remove minor imperfections like scratches and dings and rubs them out so they no loner exist. They also polish the existing finish around the imperfection and blend it in so that is can hardly be seen any longer. You can also use buffering and polishing tools after applying some type of finish like wax and it will make the final surface look bright and shiny. We want to take a closer look at buffers and polishers to help you in understand what they do best so you can find the right tool for the job. A floor buffing and polishing machine will usually have two large spinning heads at the bottom, with a shaft, handles, and controls designed for the user to push along the floor. There will be a small motor that power the rotating pads, and the user applies downward pressure to get a bright shiny polish on the floor. Before the floor is buffed and polished an wax solution is usually applied and allowed time to dry. It is then that these machines are used, and they can apply an excellent finish. You will also see these referred to as rotary floor machines, and know that this is the same as a floor buffer and polisher. The rotating heads will spin at variables speeds depending upon how deep you need to rub in to the floor. Lower speeds are needed for taking out deep rooted stains, scars, and ground in dirt. These lower speeds are also needed when you want to strip down the existing finish so you can apply a new finish. The higher speeds are generally used for polishing, or for cleaning hard wood floors. The head will for floor buffing and polishing machines will usually rotate anywhere from one hundred to four hundred revolutions per minute. Most of the floor polishers are run from wall electricity, but some industrial models can be run off of batteries or propane canisters. Plug in models provide a constant source of power and you never have to worry about it. The battery and gas models are great for green energy buildings and for accessing remote places in a building. The floor machines are usually priced in the hundreds of dollars, and can be well over one thousand dollars in cost. Car and motorcycle paint buffers and polishers are similar to their floor counterparts, with some major differences. First off, you will be using a hand tool for paint finishes to do your buffing and polishing. They usually have only one rotating head that turns at different speeds. There are automatic and manual drives where a computer controlled system will find the exact right speed for your job, or you can do this with a manual control. There are different sizes such as three inch, four inch, and six inch with the size determined by the diameter of the wheel. The user will apply pressure and adjust the speed depending on what needs to be done. With a polisher and buffer you can remove swirls, scratches, rust spots, and grime from the paint quite easily. More expensive tools will have a computer controlled feedback mechanism that adjusts the speed of the wheel to how much pressure is applied. All of these buffing tools will be plugged in to the wall electrical circuit. The rotation of the head is will vary in the thousands from one thousand to as high as eight thousand rpms. You will pay anywhere from forty dollars for a car or motorcycle buffer and polisher, and the higher end models are several hudred dollars each. If you are shopping for a new power tool to help with auto detailing then you should consider purchasing new buffers and polishers. cleaner wax..then a finishing wax?
is it okay to apply a cleaner wax then a finishing wax??? what would you use to apply both waxes..high speed polisher or a orbital buffer.. let know you opinions on this
Perfectly fine to use both but if I was going into this level of detail I'd use the cleaner wax first, then clay the car, then a finishing wax.
After you use the cleaner wax, drag your fingers across the finish, you'll still feel roughness. The clay will get all of that out and make it smooth as a mirror.
Unless you have experience with a high speed polisher I'd stay away from it and stick with an orbital or you might burn the paint if you're not careful.
Use micro fiber towels to wipe off the wax, makes it very easy and does a good job.
I like clay magic.
