HID Ballasts
HID ballasts is the new technology of its predecessor which is also called as the electrical
ballast or control gear whose sole purpose is to control the amount of the electrical
current flowing through the circuit.
The ballast varies completely on the basis of versatility and complexity and designed
separately for each type of circuit. They range from the simple series of resistors
to complex array of inductors, capacitors etc and computerized remote controlled
arrangements. The ballast is designed for the circuits to face the resistance in the circuits
and causing less power dissipation and energy and saving most bills and wastage and
ensuring maximum efficiency.
The ballasts are measured according to ballast factor; on the basis of light output in
lumens (electric-light unit) with the testing model against the reference scale that function
at its specific nominal power rating. The practical models factor for those which pass the
testing are known as lighting design. It must be remembered that ballast factor is directly
proportional to the light it produces.
Before proceeding to the HID ballasts, the simple purpose must be bear in mind so
that the understanding is easy. The basic purpose of the ballasts is the Current limiting.
Ballasts alleviate the electrical load, especially when the circuits are put in the negative
resistance or vacillation electrical source, and if this device is then connected with
the stable source, it may cause the short-circuiting or power failure. To avoid this, the
ballasts impart the positive resistance that takes the electrical supply to the appropriate
level, therefore, saving the device.
Another essential component of the ballast is the resistor, which can fixed or variable.
There are varieties of ballasts present in the market. They are reactive ballasts, electronic
ballasts and fluorescent lamp ballasts. In the reactive variety, reactance is basically
used. The electronic ballast is using the solid state electronic circuitry it provide proper
commencing to the HID lamps. Using 60 Hz standard frequency it has increased its
efficiency by 9%. The fluorescent lamp ballasts are categorized in instant start, rapid start
and programmed start each with of different circuits.
The HID ballast has been improved over the years giving more satisfactory results
making it the primary choice of many to use this technology. Now there is lots of high
effectiveness, extraordinary presentation, wide dimmable range and high frequency
variation with the additional gearing up with the ECG (electronic control device).
It has been improved to the "two line system" and "four line system" geared up with
the two low voltage control wirings and various function controls and 4 for the other
one. With the great effort over the years, further variations have been introduced in the
ballasts and new functions are introduced in the circuitry for example, universal input
voltage ranging from 120-277 VAC, high power factor, elimination of lamp flickering
etc.
Putting HID ballasts in your arsenal is the best option you have chosen to protect your
lights and the power supply in your home with best efficiency and power and bill saving.
