Chemically Removing Tree Stumps
Tree stumps are an ugly site to look at. They are useless and sometimes needlessly in the way, taking up land space where something else can be planted. Stumps can also prove harmful if in the garden or backyard as they may become breeding grounds for fungus and several other wood eating insects that later might get into the house and start eating away the wood inside.
To put an end to this, there are several ways in use to remove off tree stumps. These methods are natural, mechanical, manual or use chemicals. Chemical methods usually take long, several weeks, maybe even a month's time to show effect, but perfect results are always guaranteed leading to an easy and complete stump removal, bark and roots all.
There are various chemical products available in the market that can be used for the removal. Different companies use different constituents in their products. So, if you are not sure of what to buy or what will work best, one can always go for advice to a landscaping shop or outlet and ask them for help. They will not only direct you towards the appropriate product but also give tips and pointers to make out the most from it.
The main ingredient used in all tree removing chemicals is potassium nitrate. This compound has the ability to eat away or decompose wood by facilitating breeding conditions for fungi and other wood eating parasites and bacteria. Users are required to drill deep holes within the stump. The holes can be on the top and on the sides both. There should be enough holes to cover the stump thoroughly as these openings are later filled with a mixture formed by mixing up water and the chemical for decaying. The stump is then covered up and left alone for a few weeks. During this time the wood rots away making the stump soft enough to be easily cut down. Since the roots are also damaged and die away during the process, they too come out easily along with the leftover wood.
Another unusual method that uses chemical or at least it can be said so is the one in which sugar can be sprinkled over a stump. This has two benefits. One- it fastens the decaying rate of wood and second- putrefying wood attracts carpenter ants. These ants are harmful generally and also do not eat wood. However, they do live within rotting wood. The dig out small channels or tunnels around and such decaying wood and make it loose and rot even more. Once the stump has softened enough and is loose enough to be moved easily, it can be simply cut out or dug out and removed from its place. But, this process takes even longer than the one above is effective only in places that have carpenter ants around.
The easy and quicker methods of stump removal still remain to be the mechanical one where a stump grinder is used or the manual method where an axe and the most common chemical of all – sweat is used to get rid of the tree stump.
