World of Forms vs. the world of concrete individual things?

What are some reasons for believing that a world of Forms exists separately from the world of concrete individual things?

The Latin term "forma" is the exact Latin equivalent of the Greek term "idea". So the reason for thinking that a world of forms exists independently from the world of individual things is because "concrete things" are not "ideas" or "forms". We don't live in a world of mere ideas. We live in a world of things or substances, according to Aristotle. According to Plato, the substances of this world are mere "material copies" of subsistent "ideas" in a higher realm than this material world of change.

Why did Plato think such a thing? He got many of his ideas about this world and a "higher world" from members of the Pythagorean religious sect who thought that Everything in this world is a manifestation of number/s. Plato arguably modified the Pythagorean theory from numbers (things are manifestations of numbers) to "ideas", in saying that the things of this world "participate" in the "forms/ideas" of a higher realm. So Plato is called an "ultrarealist" philosopher, because he thought that ideas in the so-called "world of the forms/(ideas)" were more real than the things or substances of this material world.

Aristotle is called a "modified realist" philosopher because he thought that the "world of the forms/ideas" was in our minds and that everything in actual physical existence was a composite of matter in various and diverse forms.

So why do people use both the Latin (forma or form in English) and Greek (idea and eidos) terms when either expressing the doctrines of Plato and Aristotle or even their own ideas about reality?

Because the derivative Latin term "form" has less of a merely mental connotation than the Greek term "idea". Thus in modern useage we have the expression "diverse FORMS of energy" (chemical, electrochemical, nuclear, thermonuclear, etc.) where no one would consider such "forms" to be merely ideal (only in our minds). Thus, in English, the Greek term "idea" usually stands for merely mental phenomena whereas the Latin derivative term (for "idea"), which translates as "form" (from "forma" = "idea") still holds a similar sort of human "mind-independent-REALITY" (or even "ultrareality") to that which Plato thought about so long ago.

It is interesting to note that 2 of your other answerers have correctly attached Plato's (real or ultra real "forms"; rather than merely mental "ideas")) meaning to modern "forms of energy". While it is true that the atom is "mostly empty space", the same idea holds for the circumference in which a helicoptor's main rotor blade spins. That, too, is mostly empty space. But what would happen to you if you actually stepped into that "mostly empty space"? You'd be shredded!

The energy of such a helicoptor blade revolving through mostly "empty space" is miniscule in comparison to the energy of electrons located or moving (no one is sure about that, given Heisenberg's uncertainty principle) at relatively vast distances from the nuclei of atoms. Those energies are, of course, measured in electron volts. The forces which both prevent electrons from utterly leaving the influence of nuclear attraction and, mysteriously, prevent electrons from utterly collapsing into the oppositely charged nuclei of atoms, are vastly more energetic than the electrochemical reactions governed largely by the "shared electrons" in the outer energy levels of atoms. Those outer energy level reactions which largely govern how oxygen combines with the hydrocarbon fuel of a helicopter (through the controlled explosions of an internal combustion engine) --- of which a certain percentage of the energy is, then, transferred mechanically to a spinning helicoptor blade --- are less energetic than the energies of electrons in the more stable "inner energy" levels of atoms.

Hence anyone's/anything's "ability" to, metaphorically, "step into" those inner energy levels of so-called "empty space" of an atom would have far more disastrous consequences for the "stepper" (and the atom involved) than for a human being stepping into the "mostly empty space" of a spinning helicoptor blade. Philosophers tend to call the "mostly empty space" theory, the "fallacy of reductionism". However an actual understanding of the physical energies involved in the allegedly "empty space" of an atom turns a mere fallacy into a bizarre impossibility.

True, the "empty space" analogy is good. But there was another analogy employed by Ernst Rutherford when he "scientifically discovered" that the atom consisted of a cloud of electrons at a relatively vast distance from a correspondingly "vastly dense" nucleus. His analogy of positively charged Helium nuclei being either scattered by the nuclei of gold atoms, or in some cases "bounced back" towards the source (radioactive polonium) was that the phenomenon was like "firing a 15 inch (artillery) shell (helium nucleus) at a piece of tissue paper (gold foil only about 6 atoms thick) and having the artillery shell "bounce back" from the tissue.

That analogy is not one which the "mostly empty space" theorists mention along with their "empty space" emphasis. It is relatively "empty" space in which particles with actually "vast energies" function/operate, in ways which are still very poorly understood even by modern physicists. And those energies of electrons are "vastly greater" than the energy "forms" of either spinning helicoptor blades or of the electrochemical energy of a jet engine's turbine (which both defeats gravity; nature's "weakest" force; and can accelerate a jet plane beyond the speed of sound).
