An upstairs wall in my home creeks near the floor when I walk near it. What's the best way to fix it?
At first I thought the problem was just a squeaky floor as we have a few other spots in our home (built 5 years ago) that exhibit squeeks.
But after screwing down the subfloor in the whole area, the wall/floor still creeks when walking near it (or if I bounce a little up and down up to 6 or 7 feet away). From what I've read, often times builders will nail the base plate of the wall to the subfloor, not to any joists, and a loose nailing can cause noise.
But what's the best way to fix it? I don't have easy access to the ceiling below, and would prefer not having to rip out the drywall. Can i just remove the baseboard and shim? Or nail diagonally somehow through the base plate, through the subfloor, and into a nearby joist?
Here's what I do take the base board off and take some 4-6 inch screws and screw them in at a 45 d angle usually about 6 inch's apart about 8 of them, make sure you put them in bellow the base board or you'll need to patch the drywall.
