Whether/how to build own canopy for wedding?
I am getting married in July at a campground that has lots of picnic tables cemented into an asphalt pad in a circular configuration. Because I can't move the tables, I am struggling to find a local renter that has party tents that A. fit over the tables and B. can be placed on asphalt without drilling stakes into the pad.
As a solution, I was thinking of making my own out of 3/4" or 1" EMT conduit, tarps and fittings like you see here: http://www.creativeshelters.com/ . It would be a 20'x20' shed-roof (single-slant) probably 8-9 feet tall on tallest side. I'd use cement blocks or 5 gal water buckets to anchor. I'd be making 3 of them in sort of an amphitheater configuration.
Is this a fool's errand? Will I have collapsing tents and dead guests? Has anyone out there done this? Any tips?
I think it will work fine if you use the kits from the web site, including the fittings and follow the geometry they have already tested. I think the area of risk is if you are customizing something off their game plan. A 20 x 20 sheet with exposure to an updraft might be able to lift the block right off the ground. Perhaps something heavier on each leg would be wise, either multiple blocks threaded onto the pole they are holding down, or multiple water buckets for each leg. If you have access to a hose, the water buckets are very convenient, and it wouldn't be hard to lash them effectively to the poles, just be sure to have someone who earned their merit badge do the lashing.
