French Drains Solve Water Problems

French drains are one of the most effective ways to address drainage issues around your yard, foundation, and under your house. Standing and flooding water around your house can cause mold, rot, mildew, and worse yet, settling of your foundation. A french drain may be your answer.

French drains consist of a trench dug approximately 18" wide and 24" deep. Typical configurations include drain rock, a perforated pipe , and filter fabric to protect the drain rock and pipe from getting clogged up with dirt and debris. Consideration must be given to proper slope to move the water in the proper direction. Water from a French drain is typically routed to a dry well, garden beds, or other drainage areas. A common approach is to route the water to the street where rainwater is already properly managed. In many areas, hooking up the drain to the sewer system is illegal, because it overwhelms the sewage treatment plants.

Sump pump systems are frequently used with french drain systems. The sump pump will pump the water to a location that could not be normally reached due to improper slope or location. Proper sump pump system design is crucial to the success of your French drain in these types of applications. A drainage barrel and a sump pump are the basic components of a sump pump system. Sump pumps must be connected to properly grounded GFI outlets for safety reasons. Sump pumps are trigger by float switch that detects water beyond a certain level, and the automatically turning on the sump pump. Proper pump selection will ensure correct handling of the amount of water, and ensure the pump does not clog up. Draining sump pumps to the street is a common approach.

French drains can be installed anywhere water accumulates including the perimeter of your house, under the house, and in sloped areas that drain toward your house.

There are many considerations in in designing a French drain system. An experienced drainage contractor can solve all the design issues for you. For most people, their home is the largest investment they have. Proper drainage is a wise investment. Call a reputable French drain contractor to help solve your water problems.

How to prevent tree roots from growing into the sewer line?

Cutting down trees is practically forbidden (municipal pro-tree movement). Is there such thing as a metal enclosure with small holes to fill with dirt and the sewer line? The holes would be to let any leaks from the sewer drain into the soil.

Or maybe line a trench with lumber or plastic sheets so that the sewer is within this trench structure?

Roebic makes FRK-12, a foaming root killer. You put it into your system by pouring it into your toilet as you flush it, and it begins to foam on contact with water.
The advantage to this product is that the foam fills the pipe and gets hung up on the roots and kills those invading your sewer - not just the roots which are in the bottom of the pipe. I put some in our sewer over a year ago and have had no trouble since. Good luck!
