Wheel Wool

The Features and Uses of Wool
Wool is a fiber usually gathered from animals, primarily from sheep and goats. This material's uses are limitless. In fact, this type of textile has been around for many centuries, providing people with material for clothes, tapestries, and other objects. One of wool's most common uses is for footwear. Wool is often used for lining in boots and shoes designed for winter wear. The material is a natural insulator, and is handy at trapping heat in low temperatures.
Wool is also a popular material used for carpets and rugs. Wool's ability to be resilient, flexible, and moisture-repellent makes it perfect for rugs and other floor coverings. Another feature of wool that makes it very suitable for carpeting is the variety of colors and designs it can acquire through dying. Wool carpets can match any house's theme or style, and are also more comfortable to use than other carpet types.
Wool is also flame-resistant, making the material safe for use in many areas of the house. Wool rugs can be safely placed and used near fireplaces or kitchens. Wool is also resistant to stains and dirt accumulation, so maintenance and cleaning can be regularly done without difficulty. The material is naturally durable, so carpets and rugs made from wool can last a long time.
Clothing, on the other hand, is another primary use for wool. Wool fiber is normally processed through leclerc looms. Looms prepare the fabrics that are used for clothing such as sweaters, coats, and other utilities such as blankets. Looms are instruments where lengthwise yarns or threads made of wool are attached to a beam before being intersected by horizontal threads called weft threads.
A leclerc loom is composed of other different parts as well, such as a shuttle, heddles, harnesses, beaters, and reeds. It has been a tradition to weave cloth from this device, although modern versions of looms are now available on the market.
Before the wool fibers reach the looms, however, they would first go through an apparatus known as a lendrum spinning wheel. The spinning wheel is where raw wool is turned into thin threads or yarn. Through the spinning wheel and the loom, raw wool is transformed into a material with many different uses.

I am new to spinning wool and am looking at purchasing a Kromski Minstrel. Is it a good wheel for a newbie?
I am a long time spinner and own two Lendrums and a Merlin Tree wheel, as well as a Kromski Prelude purchased for my youngest grandchild (almost 4). I bought the Prelude because it was easier for her to treadle than any of my others, including my Hitchiker which is more her size than my others. Most new spinners who buy Kromski wheels are very happy with them. However, that said, since a wheel can be a major purchase I would strongly suggest that if you have the opportunity to go to a vendor who sells several different types wheels from different makers and can try them out, do so. If there is an upcoming sheep and wool festival in your area (even if, with the price of gas, it's a couple of hours away) there will be many wheel vendors there. Sitting down and trying a wheel is the best way to find the one that you want to buy. While many spinning guilds are on hiatus for the summer now, again, if you can find a guild meeting nearby go and ask members if they will allow you to try their wheels out. Many will and this will give you a better idea which way you are prepared to spend your money.
My first wheel, btw, was an Ashford wheel, it was not successful for me, so it did not stay with me long, but my first Lendrum has been with me for 11 years now. Why two of them? Hubby spins too
