7 Steps To Getting More Traffic
There are many components to the business of affiliate marketing. The business owner may have all the motivation, perseverance and desire to succeed, the business may own all the best software to simplify the business operations, and have a unique and appealing website, capable of earning a high income. In fact, everything can be perfect, but without two key aspects, this is all for nothing.
Arguably, you can get these two aspects right and everything else wrong and still be very successful, get these wrong and all the motivation, software and websites will struggle to overcome the challenges the business will face.
These two aspects are keyword research and traffic generation.
Assuming you have successfully identified your niche market, and identified the profitable keywords through your research, the next steps are promotion, promotion, and promotion, to open the floodgates on all the traffic that will become customers.
The internet is not getting any smaller though, and there are more and more businesses focused in on Affiliate Marketing because of the low start up costs and potentially high rewards, so competition is getting wider, deeper and more aggressive. With all this competition, knowing how to drive traffic to your website is critical, but not just any traffic. The difference between traffic that just hits the ‘back' button and traffic that wants to become your customers is even more critical, and these are seven basic steps to get that targeted traffic, users that actually want what the website provides.
The preferred first step is to benefit from free, organic, search engine traffic. Having high ranks in the search engines can explode the traffic to any website, and this is where keyword research is absolutely critical. When a website appears at the top of a search engine for a particular search, then studies have shown that that website will receive as much as 40% more traffic that websites appearing below that top spot, and websites above the fold receive more than 10% than websites appearing below the fold on the first page, and websites on pages two, three or more will be lucky to receive as much as 0.5% of all searches.
The second step is to gain backlinks, or exchange links, with other websites that are in a related business or field. These links, when obtained from websites with suitable rankings within the search engines, provide a vote of confidence for the website to the search engines. Rankings can be either Alexa rankings or Page Rank (PR#), but the higher the ranking, the more powerful the ‘vote' from that website is. Any website manager, intent on improving the position of their website, must consider backlinking as a critical component of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), and must work hard to get as many backlinks as possible from website with high rankings.
The third step is Article Marketing. By writing articles with the major article directories, and including links to the website within the resource box, as these articles are reused by websites for content, so the number of backlinks increases. When an article is written in a popular category, it is more likely to be reused, and the more backlinks are created, similarly, the higher quality of the article, the more likely it is to be reused. Article Marketing is also a great example of a ‘set it and forget it' approach to marketing. An article is written once and distributed once by the author, but the article directory can provide an avenue for it to be used multiple times over a long period of time.
The fourth step is to ensure the website captures the names and email addresses of as many visitors as possible to provide a databank of targeted potential customers that can receive a more targeted marketing approach. These visitors can be encouraged to sign up through providing a reward for providing this data, for example a downloadable ebook, a coupon or some type of beneficial information. Similarly, customers' information should also be maintained carefully to receive targeted marketing campaigns to encourage additional purchases. Conversion rates will be much higher for these marketing efforts than for sales made through the website.
The fifth step, if the website provides a product or service, is to enable affiliate marketing on behalf of the business. Opening the market channels to many, many affiliate marketers who have the skills and experience to laser target Customers, will dramatically increase sales for zero additional cost. With a wider reach across the internet, and the combined efforts covering a wider reach of keywords, affiliates get paid as a percentage of the sold product or service and therefore cost the product or service owner absolutely nothing, and although a percentage of profit is lost to rewarding the affiliate, the increased sales will more than subsidize this reduced margin in terms of overall revenue generated by the product or service. Affiliate schemes can be either set up via purchased software, or via dedicated affiliate managers, Clickbank is one such example.
The sixth step is to identify related businesses that would be prepared to work in a joint marketing project, or ‘joint venture', to try and provide a win-win to a single marketing effort. A joint venture might be marketing joint products to both lists of signed up visitors, or something as simple as an ad exchange. Joint ventures are a very productive means for getting a message in front of a targeted market, and for developing relationships throughout the online business community that can provide further opportunities at a later date.
The seventh, and final step, is to understand the market thoroughly. Marketing basics dictate that a business must understand the type of consumer they are marketing to and working to attract. By configuring everything from the basic look and feel of the website, to the style of writing used in copy, to the type of marketing campaign and where to advertize, the whole marketing effort must be aligned with the target market. It takes a lot of effort to get a visitor to a website, so taking advantage of this is crucial to the overall health of the business.
Strategies for improving traffic are the lifeline of any online business, and along with the identifying the most profitable keywords for a market, are at the core of the basic question, will a business succeed online.
